Frank de Boer’s Netherlands side finished their group stage conquests of the Euro 2020, maintaining a 100% win record as they dispatched North Macedonia 3-0 at the Johan Cruijff Arena. They had already secured qualification through to the round of 16 after their second win versus Austria, but they turned in another fine performance on Monday night.
New Barcelona signing Memphis Depay was among the protagonists in the victory, as was the imperious Frenkie de Jong. Depay was directly involved in all three of Holland’s goals, as they finished top of group very convincingly on nine points.
Depay scored the opening goal after a brilliant counter-attacking move in the 24th minute, and then assisted both of Georginio Wijnaldum’s second half goals. While Wijnaldum slipped from Barcelona’s hands, Memphis proved just why the Blaugrana were pursuing him for so long.
Depay completed all three of his attempted dribbles and and also won five duels aside from his well-taken goal and two assists. De Jong, meanwhile, continued to marshall the Dutch midfield with his impeccable workrate and distribution.
The 24-year old completed three out of his four attempted dribbles and registered one key pass, while doing a solid job in defense, winning six duels and making four interceptions.
The Depay-de Jong duo is going to be pivotal for de Boer’s men heading into the knockout stages. If the Netherlands were to make a deep run at this year’s Euros, these two will certainly be two of the biggest contributors.
