According to a report relayed by Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar, Manchester United have emerged as one of the clubs who might swoop in and secure Saul Niguez’s services for the upcoming season, as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are still stuck in negotiations over a move.
The sensational swap deal that has been at the centre of media attention over the past week or so seems to have cooled down since both the clubs have been unable to reach a total agreement over the conditions of the exchange.
Barcelona rightfully believe that a straight swap between Antoine Griezmann and Saul is unfair since Griezmann has a much higher market value and thus are demanding either cash or, if certain reports are to be believed, a player or two more to be included in the deal.
However, Atletico Madrid, being in the advantageous position that they are, have no reason to be pressurised and comply with Barcelona’s demands. The Catalans are the ones who need to decrease their wage bill and reportedly want to sign a midfielder, giving the defending champions the edge in the negotiations.
It was previously confirmed that Saul has attracted a lot of interest from Premier League sides, two of them being Liverpool and Chelsea, but if this report is to be trusted, Manchester United have now made progress and surpassed Liverpool in the race to sign Saul.
Griezmann will soon arrive in Barcelona training again, following which there will be more clarity about the Frenchman’s swap. Liverpool, who want to replace Georginio Wijnaldum with a technical and physical midfielder, have reportedly made no formal offers yet while their rivals Man United have taken ‘decisive steps’ towards bringing Saul to the Premier League from Atleti.
